Early Spring Flowers In Mongolia
Spring has officially arrived in Mongolia. It feels magical to stumble across delicate and colorful flowers in early spring, especially after Mongolian cold and long winter months. 1. Yellow Pasque Flower (Pulsatilla Patens Subsp Flavescens(zucc.) Zameilis)
This perennial herb flowers towards the beginning of May to July. You will find it growing in larch and birch forests, forest fringes, pine forests, river valleys, Kobresia meadows, shrubberies, dwarf thickets, meadow, more rarely steppe slopes. In traditional Mongolian medicine, the roots are used for treating scurvy, broken bones and diarrhea.
2. Pasque flower Pulsatilla Turczaninovii Kryl & Serg
Herbs, perennial, 5-35 cm. Flowers blue-violet. Flowering and fruiting in May to July. You will see it growing more common in mountain-steppe, often sandy and stony lopes, waterside pebbles, pine forests, dry forest fringes, sandy and forb-grass steppes.
3. Siberian larch (Larix Sibirica Ledeb)
Siberian larch trees to 40 m tall. Pollination May, seed maturity September to October. It can be found in mountain forests as main stand-forming species, sometimes in river valleys in a lower mountain belt.
4. Edelweiss - Leonopodioides (Willd)Beauverd
Edelweiss, 5-15 cm. Flowering and fruiting in May to September.blooms between from May to September. it is found from mountain steppe to mountain belt in Mongolia. Everyone knows that it is as a national symbol, especially of Romania, Austria, Bulgaria, Slovenia, and Switzerland. According to folk tradition, giving this flower to a loved one is a promise of dedication. In ancient Mongolia, it was used to make a footpad for boots to help treat low blood pressure.
5.Tiger Iris - Iris Tigridia Bunge Ex Ledeb
Herb, perennial, 5-30 cm. Flowers dark blue, violet, or light purple. Flowering and fruiting in May to August. You can easily find it more in steppe debris and stony slopes, rocks and screes, sandy-pebble steppes.
6. Blue Delphinium & Larkspur - Delphinium Grandiflorum.L
This perennial herb towards in May to October. You will see this more common in meadow and forb steppes, steppe and dry meadows in river valleys, forest meadows and fringes, light pine and birch forests.
7. Greater Celandine - Chelidomium Majus.L
Herbs, perennial, 30-60(-100) cm tall. Flowers yellow. Flowering and fruiting from May to September. It can be found in larch forests, birch groves, waterside shrubberies, shady foot of rocks and screes, the bottom of the creek valley
8. Chickweed - Stellaria Dichotoma.L
Herbs, perennial, 15-30(-60) cm tall. Flowers white. Flowering and fruiting ifromMay to August. Habitat is steppe dry debris and stony slopes, screes, rocks, sometimes on pebbles and sands.
9. Chinese stellera - Stellera Chamaejasmine.L
Herbs perennial, 20-50 cm tall. Flowers white, yellow, or red- dish purple. Flowering and fruiting in May to September. You will see this flower in stony and rocky steppe slopes, steppe and forest meadows, forest fringes, pastures.
10. Bird Vetch - Vicia Cracca.L
This perennial herb towards in May to July. You will find it in forest and waterside meadows, meadow slopes, larch forests, birch groves, forest fringes, shrubberies, waterside pebbles, rock, and screes.
11. Rhododendron - Rhododendron Dahuricum.L
This perennial herb flowers towards in May to July. You will easily find it in larch and cedar pine-larch forests, and their fringes, birch forests, rocky slopes in forest belt. Mongolian believe that sitting in area of these flower is good at tiredness in spring, that’s why people tend to search the flowers in spring. It is common names as Dalii Yagaan in Mongolia.
About Flower Guide Book in Gorkhi- Terelj National Park
This simple flower guide book covers 50 plant species can be found in Gorkhi-Terelj National Park but also in mountain forest-steppe belt of Mongolia. The book was authored by doctor B.Oyuntsetseg and M.Munkhjargal and written in three languages of English, Japan and Mongolian with accurate picture description in 2016. All income of the book had been donated to kids’ orphanages named Sarnai’s orphanage center and Magic land in Mongolia.
