Kharkhorin
In the mid-13th century, Karakorum thrived as a bustling hub of activity. It was here that Chinggis Khaan established a vital supply base, laying the groundwork for his ambitious plans. Under the direction of his son, Ugudei, Karakorum evolved into a proper capital city, drawing traders, dignitaries, and skilled artisans from far and wide, spanning Asia to Europe.
This golden era endured for approximately four decades until Kublai Khan, in a controversial move, shifted the capital to Khanbalik, which later became known as Beijing. This decision stirred lingering resentment among some Mongolians, marking the beginning of Karakorum's decline. With the subsequent collapse of the Mongol empire, Karakorum was left deserted, its once-thriving streets silent.
Welcome to Virtual Kharakhorum
The virtual city of Kharakhorum, recreated with modern advanced technology, is dedicated to everyone.
Tragically, in 1388, vengeful Manchurian soldiers razed what remained of Karakorum to the ground, erasing its legacy from the annals of history. However, remnants of its glory days found a new purpose in the construction of Erdene Zuu Monastery in the 16th century. The monastery was constructed using bricks salvaged from the ruins of the ancient capital city wall, infusing it with a tangible connection to Karakorum's storied past. Its design mirrored that of the ancient city, preserving its architectural legacy and offering visitors a glimpse into the grandeur of bygone eras.

Today, the small village of Kharkhorin stands a few kilometers from the ancient ruins of Kharkhorin city. While it may lack the charm of its medieval predecessor, recent surges in tourism have spurred improvements in local infrastructure. Visitors can now find comfort in several ger camps, each offering amenities like restaurants, while the town center hosts basic cafes. Though Kharkhorin may not live up to the romanticized expectations of the Middle Ages, its evolving landscape serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of resilience and adaptation.
