
Ethnic diversity
The Mongols constitute one of the principle ethnographic divisions of Oriental , or Asian, peoples. The geographic origin of the Mongols themselves is from the Tungus people ( the modern Evenki) in the northeast corner of present day.
Khalkha Mongols
The Khalkha Mongols are the dominant ethnic group of Mongolia at roughly 82% of the total population. As the majority group that controls the ancestral homelands of all Mongol people, the Khalkh people see themselves as the direct ancestors of Genghis Khan, and therefore the true standard bearers of authentic Mongolian culture. Khalkha Mongol is the official language of the nation.
Kazakh
Kazakh (4.3%) is the largest minority nation and live mostly in western Mongolia’s Bayan-Olgii and Khovd aimags. There have been several migrations, including the arrival of Kazakhs from Xinjiang in the 1880s, and in recent years the departure of Kazakhs from Bayan-Olgii in large numbers to work in Kazakhstan. The kazakhs are herdsmen who hunt with eagles. The Kazakhs arae tradionally Sunnis, and mosques that were destroyed during Mongolia’s anti-religious campaigns have been rebuilt.
Dorvod
The Dorvod (2.8%) found in Uvs, Khovd and Bayan-Olgii aimag in far western Mongolia constitute the largest Oirat tribe.
